La Grande High School students will perform in “The Pirates of Penzance” Thursday through Saturday at the La Grande High School auditorium.

Show time is 7 p.m. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students and are available at the door or in advance at Sunflower Books or the LHS office.

The musical by Arthur Sullivan and W. S. Gilbert stars Frederick (Travis Rasmussen) as a 21-year-old man who has finished his apprenticeship with fellow pirates. He leaves the pirates who raised him and ventures into the world.

The young, beautiful maiden, Mabel (Noelle Goodenberger) catches his eye.

Alas, there is an obstacle to their love — Frederick was born in a leap year, which means he still remains a pirate.

Audience members will see the handsome, though somewhat limited pirate king (Miguel Gomez), the fast talking major general (Donovan Durfee) and the very limber sergeant of police (Quentin Durfee).

Watch Frederick do an Elvis impersonation; the major general speed talk with excellent rhymes; the police crew gyrate to their slap stick dancing; and listen to the pirate king with an award-winning flute solo.

A cast of 22 students will perform.

Denise Wheeler and Kevin Durfee are directing the play.

Pirate costumes

Avast! I've been working on some costumes all the live long day. These are for the High School musical. We are doing Pirates of Penzance. ARRRRRGH!
It will be performed Dec. 1st, 2nd & 3rd.
Look sharp now me hearties. The Major General needs more gold, it doesn't look military enough.

The Pirate King needs more buttons on the cuffs & his belt tightened. We haven't made the hats for the girls yet. Ruth needs more padding, she is supposed to be matronly looking. I suppose we will have to add wrinkles too. What think ye? Do you be wanting to walk the plank? yo ho!

Sewing, Daily Sewing

We are doing Pirates of Penzance at the High school in November! I got all the measurements & have begun sewing. There are 18 in the cast with two costume changes for the 12 girls & 2 costume changes for 5 of the boys.
I found a Christmas red velour bedspread at a yard sale and I cut out a Capt Hook type jacket with black cuffs and a black collar. Still sewing.
The girls in the high school sewing class are sewing mopcaps. Should have started with straight edges... I have cut out red pantaloons, a red triangle scarf, some tan pirate pants & the top of a tan apron for them to sew.
We will be going on a field trip on Thursday to EOU to tour their costume shop.
The girls in the class are anxious to go. The permission slips are in.
